What is EPR?
EPR stands for Extended Producer Responsibility, an expansion of the existing producer responsibility regulations for packaging. EPR will obligate packaging producers to pay to fund the recycling of that packaging at the end of its life.
Packaging EPR was introduced in the UK in 2023, creating a reporting obligation for any company with a turnover of over £1 million which handles over 25 tonnes of packaging as a 'Small Producer', while any company with a turnover of over £1 million which handles over 50 tonnes of packaging is classed as a 'Large Producer'. Large Producers will have to pay levies based on the cost of recycling their materials, while small producers only have to collect and report their data, with the first submissions being due in early 2025 based on 2024's activities.

The time and knowledge required to complete this reporting can impose a large administrative burden as companies struggle with unfamiliar data requirements that they lack the time or expertise to complete. Many companies therefore choose to use a consultant to carry out the required submissions on their behalf.
